Steven Frischling, aka: Fish, is globe hopping professional photographer, airline emerging media consultant working with large global airlines and founder of The Travel Strategist. Fish has racked up more than 1,000,000 miles since he started to track his mileage in 2005.

Fish's travel tends to be less than leisurely, including flying from New York to Basrah, Iraq, for six hours; Hong Kong for eight hours, Kuwait City for two hours and traveling around the world in 3.5 days to shoot a series of photo assignments in 4 cities and 4 countries on 3 separate continents.

Fish grew up at the end of New York's JFK International Airport's Runway 4R/22L, which probably explains his enjoyment of watching planes, fly overhead. When not shooting photos or traveling Fish designs camera bags, hones is expertise on airline security and spends his time at home cheering for the Red Sox with his 3 kids 102 yards from the ocean.

iPro Lenses, A Whole New Way Of iPhone Photography

There is an old saying, “the best camera is the one you have with you.”   As a photographer I have had the odds stacked in my favour for years rarely leaving my house without two SLR cameras and a kit of lenses allowing me to shoot the vast majority of what I wanted the […]

Properly Packing Cameras To Avoid Damage In Transit

Photographers like to be ready for anything, I get that, I know that, I have lived that for many years … but when packing cameras in bags that may go under a plane, including being ‘valet checked’ while boarding a Regional Jet or Turbo Prop, packing gear properly makes far more sense than packing it […]

“JetBlue Stole My Cameras” … yea, probably not

The photography and airline interwebs are abuzz with a scathing blog post by photographer Jess T. Dugan claiming that on the 18th of December 2012, flying between Chicago O’Hare and Boston Logan, on JetBlue flight 922, the airline stole her camera gear.   There are lessons to be learned here for photographers from Ms. Dugan’s unfortunate […]

The TSA Hasn’t Rescinded Checkpoint Photography Policy

Over the past few days rumours have begun running rampant that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has rescinded its policy allowing photography of its security operations and checkpoints … these rumours are false.   The main source for the rumor that the TSA eliminated its policy is due to the agency’s website change over. Many […]

Are Tripods & Monopods OK For Airline Carry-On? Yes!

A common question from traveling photographers is can they bring their tripod or monopod on-board flight as a carry on item. As Flying With Fish has not covered this topic in a few years, I figured it was a good time to bring it up again, as the uncertainty photographers face seems to surface with […]

Using An iPhone Over A ‘Real Camera’ & Why

As a photographer I have had what seemed to be a natural biased against using my iPhone over my ‘real cameras’ for a long time.   Naturally when I saw an image I wanted to hold a full size camera in my hand, select my exposure and have a choice of lenses … at worst, I […]

Revisiting Flying With Film 101 : The Do’s and Don’ts

There has been a recent resurgence in film photography, maybe it is Kodak’s bankruptcy that has reminded serious photographers, and long time shooters, that shooting film is fun and a medium that is worth preserving … or maybe it is just that those of us who have been shooting digital for a really long time […]

Timbuk2’s Subtle Camera Bag : The Snoop

I hate camera bags … no, that isn’t true. I have been involved in the design process for two camera bags for the legendary Domke company, I have designed a photo insert for Mountainsmith bags and played a significant role in designing a compact camera bag for Mountainsmith. My collection of camera bags has caused […]

Debunking “Striking Multiple Exposure Shot of Takeoffs at Hannover Airport”

For the past few months on a nearly daily basis the same image appears somewhere in my Twitterstream, Facebook Wall, Google + feed or in my email box … often more than once a day. The photo is a beautiful image of dozens of aircraft lifting off from Runway 27L at Germany’s Hannover-Langenhagen Airport. The […]

I don’t tend to write about contests, well BoardingArea.com contests, but then again Flying With Fish lives on BoardingArea.com … but Scottevest has announced a contest that will make any traveler, photographer or travel photographer get excited.   Scottevest’s “For The Trip Of Your Life” contest will award one lucky traveler US$10,000 to go anywhere […]
