BM3 John Kourtz, of the U.S. Coast Guard, mans a 50 caliber machine gun on the bow of a new “Defender Class” Homeland Security Response Boat, as it patrols the area surrounding Logan International Airport, in Boston Harbour, during a daily patrol of the busy shipping Harbour. The new “Defender Class” vessel, one of less than a dozen prototypes in service, will replace more than 300 non-standardized vessels in use by the US Coast Guard. SAFE Boats Int’l, of Port Orchard, WA, won the contract of US$145mil to supply the USCG with 700 “Defender Class” boats, the first boats to arrive in July 2003, with a minimum of 2 per week arriving after that date, at a cost of US$180,000 per boat. SAFE Boats Int’l is classified as a small business by the Small Business Administration.
