AirAsia X Introduces Kids Free Zone

Not long ago Malaysia Airlines forbid children from being seated in the upper deck of their Boeing 747s and Airbus A380 flights flying between its hub at Kuala Lumpur International Airport and London’s Heathrow Airport.  Many airlines unofficially discourage children from flying in premium cabins and RyanAir has long since threatened to launch kid free flights … but now one airline has officially launched a kids free section on flights.

AirAsia X, a Malaysia based long haul low cost carrier (LCC), has announced a new passenger cabin named “QuiteZone” to be rolled out this coming February.  The QuietZone cabin will be rolled out on board the airline’s Airbus A330-300 aircraft, in rows 7-through-14, directly behind the twelve seats in the Premium Cabin.   AirAsia X’s QuietZone will only allow seating for passengers aged 12 and older.

Air Asia intends to create a bulkhead buffer between the QuiteZone and the main cabin. The cost of some peace and quiet in flight?  Approximately US$36 … although it should be noted that AirAsia X “reserves the right to seat a passenger with a guest under 12 at the Quiet Zone during situations deemed necessary for operational, safety or security reasons.”  Should a screaming 2 year old be seated in the QuietZone, refunds will be offered at the airline’s discretion.

Should you book a flight in AirAsia X’s QuietZone, seek out seats towards the front of the cabin, as sound tends to travel very easily in a confined metal tube should a screaming child be seated in Row 15.
