1/12/2009 – Eight Years Ago Today A Titan Airline Vanished From The Skies

At this time 8 years ago a legend of the airline industry puts the wheels of one its MD-80 aircraft down at Las Vegas McCarran Airport never to be seen again.   Many travellers go to Las Vegas to get lost, however the bright lights of Las Vegas flickered over the loss of Trans World Airlines (TWA) shortly before Midnight on December 1st 2001.   When the sun rose over Las Vegas on the morning of December 2nd the signage over TWA’s check in counter, the arrival & departure boards at airports around the world and the flights numbers formerly showing “TW” were now “AA.”

The history of TWA still lives on in a single airline terminal made famous by the airline at New York’s JFK International Airport. As JetBlue has moved into JFK’s Saarinen Terminal, an architectural masterpiece, rebranding it as JFK T5 (Terminal 5), a single TWA sign remains lit on the east side of the terminal.

Happy Flying!
