6/1/2009 – A Great Travel Book To Show Your Kids The World : 500 Places to Take Your Kids Before They Grow Up

On the fourth night of Chanukah I tore into some wrapping and pulled out a fantastic book that I hope my kids will enjoy. This book is Frommer’s 500 Places to Take Your Kids Before They Grow Up.

The content of this book is global, expansive and wonderful! From Monument Valley in Kayenta, Arizona, USA in the #1 position to Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark in the #500 position, I have been slowly reading the book cover to cover.

The content of the book is broken up into easy to use chapters and sub-chapters making it easy to find the kind of adventure you want to take your kids on from Taking In The Scenery To Rides & Thrills nearly every getaway genre you can think of is in here. The start of each location gives an age range so you can determine if a location is right for you and your kids.

On the first day of reading 500 Places to Take Your Kids Before They Grow Up, I found one location I have always wanted to visit since I was a little kid. At #186, The Ancient City of Petra, in Wadi Mousa, Jordan.

Petra is carved into the mountains cliffs and dates back to 400B.C. The sheer majesty of seeing a city carved out of mountains that still stands today has always captivated my imagination (and Steven Spielberg‘s imagination as well, as Petra appears in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade)

A little bit closer to home, at #141 I find an attraction my kids visit often, and my family has a membership to, The Mystic Aquarium, in Mystic, Connecticut, USA. The Mystic Aquarium, which is located just down the street from the Mystic Seaport (which is #272) is a great place to take the kids for the day and learn about sea life. Not only is the sea life fascinating to watch, but also the other exhibits will keep both kids and adults entertained and educated. My kids can watch the Beluga Whales all day long and love being able to climb down the ladder into a ‘dive bell.’

At #316 who can pass up the opportunity to visit Notre Dame de Paris? Notre Dame is famous for not only the Victor Hugo’s ‘Quasimodo’ who ‘lived’ there, but also its history, its wonderful architecture and grandeur, but also the way it rises up from an the ÃŽle de la Cité in the middle of the Seine at the center of Paris.

I hope to start my travels with my kids in early 2010 when the youngest one in my house begins to understand there is a world outside his home. So far, planning how I want to show my kids the world, through the suggestions of Frommer’s 500 Places to Take Your Kids Before They Grow Up is going to require me to find a little over US$2,500,000 … because there is just so much of this world I want my kids to see!

Below are two photos of my personal copy of the book. I shot these the day after I got the book; in a rare moment I found myself able to stop reading it and put it down for a moment.

Happy Flying!
